The Empty Pier

Last year when traveling to the Outer Banks in North Carolina I was able to get a lot of good pics.  One morning I decided to get up and drive to the Avon Pier.  I walked around the pier trying to find the best place to setup for some great sunrise shots.  I initially was standing up on a mountain of sand hoping it would give me a great vantage point but as soon as I could setup, the owner of the pier came out yelling at me telling me to get off.  She explained that they are there to help protect their structures during hurricanes, and they cost a lot of money.  After I told her what I was doing she was then nice enough to allow me to go up on the pier for few pictures.  Here is one of those pics.

Morning Haze

Yesterday morning I was heading into work on a road behind our subdivision.  It was foggy and as I was driving I found the light coming through the trees with the combination of fog to be very interesting.  I stopped in the middle of the road and opened my door and shot a few pics.

This image was created using my Leica M9-P and 50mm summilux.  I initially edited the picture with Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2.  It has a slider that allows for you to selectively bring back colors.  I did this to the road and really liked the look.  Unfortunately, I didn’t like the rest of the pic thus I decided I would go back to my original file and process it through OnOne Softwares Perfect Layers.  Once I did this I felt I was on to something.  I then opened up Photoshop CS 5 and layered the two pics.  Next I extended the sun rays and added a sepia tone to give it a more warm feeling.

Simple sunrise

I’m sure most of you noticed that I take a lot of black and white pictures.  I don’t know if it is just a “phase” or that my interests have changed.  Most recently, I’ve began shooting both RAW and black and white jpeg so that I can get an idea of what will work best.

This shot was taken at the Outer Banks.  I have both a color and black and white version but prefer the black and white.

The Orange Sunrise

Sunrises and sunsets are always amazing to watch.  The surrounding environment is calm, the sky undergoes multiple changes in color, and the rush of daily life has either not begun or has ended.

When I was in the Outer Banks taking pictures of the Avon Pier I witnessed one of those moments.  As the sun began to rise, it cast an orange glow in the sky.  I was able to line the shot just center and below the pier.  I didn’t realize until later that there were two birds posing for the pic.
