Hello

When I attended Steve Huff’s Photography Workshop, one of our assignments was to ask someone on the street if we could take a picture of them.  I think most would agree, this is not an easy thing to do.  Once you do it a few times, like most things, it becomes less awkward.  Probably, the best advice when doing this is to tell your subject why your taking their picture and try to carry a conversation with them for a few seconds to get them relaxed and comfortable with you.

This picture was taken of a lady waiting for the bus at Steve’s workshop.  She actually approached me inquiring why we were all taking pictures.  We talked for a few seconds and she allowed me to take this shot of her.

Pickwick

Summer of 2008 was around the time that my interest in photography began to pick up.  During my 3 years prior, I was too involved with residency to have time to take pictures outside the office and surgery.  Summer of 2008 I went on the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk.  I was just starting to experiment with HDR and here is one of those pictures.  The shot was taken using 3 exposures and I hand held the camera (typically you want to use a tripod).

A lot to look forward to

I was amazed a few weeks ago when I was in Chicago of how many weddings were going on on Michigan Avenue. I suppose it would be a great place to tie the knot. We came across this bride and groom who were getting their picture taken. I had my Leica 28mm summicron and snapped this picture. I really like the wide angle here. It gives you a sense of how large the occasion was.

I want that perfect shot!

I always find it funny when you see photographers trying to position themselves for the best shot.  You will often find us laying on the ground, bent over, turned side ways, etc…  This person was trying to take a picture of what appeared to be his girlfriend.  I love the way he squats to try to get the camera right at eye level.

Reflection

As my skills as a photographer have improved, I find my self looking at the world around me differently.  For example, this weekend I was in Chicago for a street photography workshop given by Steve Huff.  We were all standing at Crown Fountain in Millennium Park taking pictures and this couple were having their pictures taken by a professional photographer.  As I stood and watched, I looked down and liked the reflection of the couple, photographer and background. Therefore, instead of taking a picture the couple I decided to focus on the reflection.

Age

Last week when I traveled through South Whitley, looking for picture opportunities I came across this old beat up car at a local service store.  The car was a dark ugly color and definitely wouldn’t make for a good “color” pic.

Using my 35mm summicron, I was able to easily blur the background and focus in on the car (that’s why I love Leica lenses).  Converting the image to black and white using Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 allowed me to bring more detail out in the car and made for a better pic.

Carol’s Corner

Yesterday, I was driving through South Whitley.  It’s a typical small Indiana town with just a few downtown buildings.  For a small town and historic looking downtown, it was busy with patrons at the local bars and restaurants.  As I was making my way through town I came across a corner ice cream parlor.  It definitely had a retro look and was a great picture opportunity.  Maybe next time I’ll stop and get some food.
